For anyone in college who is a fraternity member, one of the most fun and best events to attend is a fraternity formal. This is an event where a fraternity will hold a formal or semi-formal at the end of each semester. A formal marks the end of a semester of memories and is much like a high school prom.
What Is It?
So a fraternity formal is just a weekend getaway where a bunch of brothers and their dates go to the party. There are two formals per year, one in the winter and one in the spring, and usually, the spring one is crazier.
A tradition for these formulas is for each brother's date to make a cooler with a funny decoration. These coolers usually have the fraternity and brother names on them. But upper-level students don't usually do this. These formals are a blast; everyone is ready to party from Friday to Sunday!
Who Plans It?
The formal is an event usually organized by a social committee within a fraternity. It is one of the more memorable times of your life, and almost all of your fraternity members or friends will go. You might as well go and not miss out on all the fun.
What’s the Dress Code?
The dress code for a winter or spring fraternity formal is formal wear. For guys, this means a suit with a tie. They should also wear dress shoes and a belt. Hair should be gelled or sprayed, and guys should shave and look their best for pictures. For ladies, a nice dress is appropriate.
What Should You Expect in the Venue?
There should be a table with a white tablecloth and a vase of flowers in the middle. The plates, utensils, and glasses (with the fraternity’s symbol on them) will be arranged neatly on the table. The waitstaff will be wearing black pants and a white shirt. All three of these are provided by the host.
Music at an event can be provided by a DJ or a live band, depending on the atmosphere and level of formality. There is usually a designated dance floor, and even if you don't enjoy dancing or aren't particularly good at it, I recommend getting out on the dance floor and having fun.
There is usually a bar where guests can purchase drinks at formal events.
At an open bar party, you pay one set fee to enter, and then you can drink as much as you want while you are there. This can be a great deal if you plan on drinking a lot. However, the drinks are usually not as high quality as they would be at a cash bar.
Cash bars offer drinks that range from $3 to $10 but are of better quality.
Additional Information
We highly recommend bringing a smartphone to capture the memories of your fraternity formal in case the fraternity doesn't have a photographer or videographer.
Stick around to watch a slideshow of images from the fraternity. This will include images of members and great times the fraternity has had.
Attend a fraternity formal even if you aren't a member of one. It's a lot of fun, and you'll create once-in-a-lifetime memories.
